Fences, a drama film, explores the African-American experience in the 1950s, as well as the race relations and family tensions that come with it. Denzel Washington directed and starred in it along with Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Stephen Henderson, Mykelti Williamson, Russell Hornsby, and Saniyya Sidney. August Wilson, the playwright who also wrote the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award play on which the film was based on, wrote the screenplay.
Troy Maxson (Washington), a former baseball star in the Negro League, lives with his wife, Rose (Davis), and Cory (Adepo) in Pittsburgh in the 1950s. While he earns a respectable, if menial, living as a waste collector, he’s struggling to provide for his family. He has to come to terms with the events in his life while also struggling to accept his son’s dream of becoming a college football player.
