During the Battle of Okinawa in Japan, Desmond T. Doss was a wartime medic in the United States Army. But unlike most of his comrades, he refused to bear arms even as his life depended on defending himself against constant enemy fire because of his firm beliefs in non-violence. He was not only a devout Seventh-day Adventist but also a conscientious objector. Yet he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery in single-handedly saving more than 75 lives, all while being subjected to a barrage of shots.
